It has been known that pute oxygen, especially the capillary endothelium, respiratory epithelium. This study attemps to determine the effects of excess oxygen on epithelial and cilia change of trachea. Adults male ra
ts were exposed to pure oxygen
at
atmospheric pressure for 24 and 36 hrs. Tissue was prepared for the transmission election microscope by plastin embedding.
Election microscope showed a loss of microvilli, changes in the outer membrane of cilia, irregular enlargement of mitochondria. Nonciliated cells appered swollen and blocked on ciliated cells. Afetr oxygen exposure, a heavy mucous exudate
appeared,
producing mucostasis and reducing ciliary movements.
